Word Soup BlackBerry 10

Word Soup BlackBerry 10Word Soup, the popular UK coin-op word game is now available for BlackBerry 10 and is one of the most addictive anagram puzzle games I’ve played.

Word Soup started life as a coin-op game in pubs and bars across the UK. It quickly became one of the most popular games, eventually installed in over 30,000 pubs across the UK.

The premise is simple – join blocks to make words of three or more letters in any direction.

Any blocks used disappear and the blocks above fall down.  Tilting your device, you can use these empty spaces by sliding rows of letters across the screen to create new word possibilities.

The board is huge. Nine columns and 12 rows of letters fill the playing field. Like Scrabble, difficult-to-place letters like Q’s and Z’s have the highest point value while R’s, S’s and vowels are worth less. The longer the word you make, the more points you score.

Players form words by connecting one letter to any of the eight adjacent letters, then connecting the next until a word is formed.

The game has three modes. A Relaxed Game, a Timed Game and a Brain Game.

Relaxed Game

The relaxed Game is a good place to start as it gets you familiar with how the game operates with no time constraints.

Players can spend as long as they like looking for the best possible word and keeping an eye on what letters will fall away when the word is accepted.

In Relaxed, the goal is just to get a high score on a single board. The game continues until the grid is empty or there are no more moves.  A bonus is awarded for clearing the whole board.

Timed Game

Timed Game is a more stressful affair that otherwise follows the same rules, only against a timer.  The timer counts down in the top right of the screen and you are constantly aware of it as you try and make words.

Brain Game

Brain Game is my personal favourite.

Brain Game is split into different sections and when you select longer words, more boxes drop down refilling some of the spaces.  This makes it harder to complete the grid but gives you the option of obtaining a higher score.

A progress meter is shown at the top right of the screen and as you reach 100% progress you move onto another level.

In every game you can get a hint if you are stuck and if you are really stuck you can have the remaining blocks  reassembled  and continue playing.

At the end of each game, you are shown the longest word you made, the top scoring word you made and your total score including your ranking for each.

If you reached a high score you can enter your name as per most games.

Records

Game records are pretty extensive.

You have the high scores for the biggest, longest and best words.  You can gain game achievements in a variety of different categories and you can see a detailed breakdown of your game statistics.

With Scoreloop integration, you can see how you match up to other Word Soup players.

The only negative that I noticed is that the right side of the screen is occasionally not very responsive, so I was having difficulty selecting letters on the first tap.

However, this is not specific to just this game and may be an issue with the BlackBerry 10 OS rather than the game itself.

At £1.50 and with no required in-app purchases, Word Soup is just simply fantastic.  Where else can you spend £1.50 and be entertained for hours and hours.  Don’t hesitate, just buy it and you won’t regret it.
